AFMLTA National Conference 2011

Darwin Convention Centre
July 6th - 9th 2011

As President of the Language Teachers Association of the Northern Territory, I am proud to announce that the 18th Biennial Australian Federation of Modern Language Teachers Associations National Conference will be held in Darwin.

The Conference will be held at the Darwin Convention Centre in the new Wharf 1 Precinct. The Convention Centre is located only a few minutes walk to the city and the pleasurable dry season outdoor dining facilities. It also houses a wave pool and a lagoon to help keep family members entertained.

Themes for the Conference are Enrich, Consolidate, Aspire.
  • Enrich: Linguistic and Intercultural Understanding
  • Consolidate: Teaching, Learning and Assessment
  • Aspire: Excellence in Pedagogy, ICT use and Future Focus
With the Federal Government's current focus on education, the Digital Education Revolution, Building the Education Revolution Language Centres, the Indigenous Languages Policy, the National Asian Languages and Studies in Schools Program stimulus, and the National Curriculum, there is so much activity in the realm of teaching and learning languages that I invite all involved in languages education to submit papers or conduct workshops.

The Northern Territory is home to many languages, including some of the oldest languages in the world - Australian Aboriginal Languages. There are more than 45 Australian Languages spoken in the Northern Territory. Additionally, the Northern Territory is very multicultural with many Asian, European and other languages spoken widely.

In the Northern Territory, we face the tyranny of distance; with many locations being uninhabitable and some unreachable during certain times of the year. As a result, the Territory encourages the use of information and communication technologies and other multimedia forms for interaction and the teaching and learning of languages.

Finally, Darwin is on the doorstep of Asia. Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, East Timor, Thailand, not to mention China, Japan, Korea and India - all these places are so close to Darwin.

I encourage one and all to come to Darwin for the Conference and then immerse yourself in Australia's oldest languages and cultures or continue your journey and refine your Asian language communication skills. I look forward to seeing you all in Darwin, July 2011.
